Bye, Bye JPGs and GIFs
Posted by John, 8th August 2003

Not everyone can be a developer and a graphics artist. This can be a real problem when developing web pages. You might be a great developer or page designer, but the thought of spending endless hours with image editing software, fiddling with pixels and experimenting with a bewildering array of filters and effects might fill you with dread.

Of course, you have other alternatives. You can surf the net looking for those elusive, eye-catching graphics. It's difficult to find exactly what you want, however, and there are always worries about copyright. Or you can go out and buy a button generation utility - there are some great ones out there. The trouble is, they tend to be a bit pricey.

That's why the team here are so excited about starting work on our new Mercury applet. The neat thing with it is, the graphics engine within Mercury will have a wide range of built-in button textures (such as plastic, steel, glass, etc.), shapes (square and rounded) and effects (shadows, light effects, etc.) and will display your buttons dynamically. This has a great advantage over the 'traditional' way of generating buttons:

• No graphics. None. Ziltch. No more JPEGs or GIFs.

That's right - with Mercury you will be able to forget all about having to painstakingly draw button graphics and position text on them. That's all done for you automatically within the Mercury applet.

If that wasn't enough, this means you won't have to put any button graphics on your web-site, just the Mercury applet. Your web-site visitors won't have to wait for any button graphics to download! Let it sink in

• Faster download times

I'll publish further updates as and when interesting stuff happens.
