Basic Market Research Posted by John, 12th August 2003
I read somewhere that you should check out competitors sites and download sites to see what is - and isn't - popular. This is a simple way to find out information and yet incredibly useful.
I now find I regularly visit other sites to see what products they are offering. Just try it - download their software and give it a go. Is it easy to use? Will it appeal to all experience levels of user? What makes it sell? Is there anything that puts you off the software? I don't just limit these reconnaisance missions to competitors - look at popular sites that you use frequently and ask the same questions.
If you don't do this, then you're missing a golden opportunity to improve your own product line and sales. Many companies have spent fortunes on basic market research to find out what works and what doesn't. With a little bit of your own research, you can learn valuable lessons from them. |
