Java Applets
• "ERROR: Not in trial folder!!" displayed in the first menu • What Is A Java Applet? • Will Applets Work On Every PC? • External URLs Don't Work • How Can I Make The Background Transparent?
• HISTORY - What's Been Fixed?
"ERROR: Not in trial folder!!" This problem will only occur on the trial verion of the eXpand applet. It means the applet has been moved out of the trial folder. This is one of the limitations of the trial and the menu links will be disabled.
To correct the situation, move the WibbleExpand.class file back into the trial folder or re-install the eXpand trial.
What Is A Java Applet? A Java applet is a tiny 3rd party program that is downloaded onto your site visitor's computer. The eXpand Java applet contains a pre-compiled animation system with an automatic navigation program, allowing you to simply and quickly configure it and add menus to your web pages.
Will Applets Work On Every PC? The vast majority of Windows computers (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP) are distributed with the capability of running Java applets. Additionally, Java applets are compatible with most popular internet browsers such as Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
External URLs Don't Work External URLs must be prefixed by "http://".
If you define - say - www.wibbleware.com as a 'Page_x' parameter value, you will find this does not work because eXpand treats it like a relative URL. The only way that you can direct eXpand to an external URL is to use the full address syntax - http://www.wibbleware.com
See Defining menus for further information.
How Can I Make The Background Transparent? Unfortunately, Java applets can't have transparent backgrounds. However, you can alter the background color of the applet to match the background color of the page to make the background appear to be transparent. See the information on the BGColor parameter for more information.
HISTORY - What's Been Fixed? V1.3 Updated the eXpand user guide to fix problems with some of the example applet parameters (incorrect image references).
v1.2 The applet had to be corrected to prevent all URL links opening in new windows, regardless of the frame parameters.
v1.1 The eXpand applet was corrected to use the correct frame target parameter when linking to a URL - the main and sub frame parameters were corrupted in certain circumstances.
